Chris Hanlon: "As a child I remember being fascinated by a painting my late father made of an apple wrapped in blue crêpe paper. The painting got lost somehow so i decided to try and recreate it but i just couldn't get it to look like my memory of it which saddened me. Later on I found some of these failed attempts on my camera and they took on a different presence, and I realised that this failure itself was interesting, I removed the apple which seemed to represent the absence of my father, the void was to me like a cave whether looking out or looking in – they all seemed powerfully allegorical.

Cave is a painting of a crumpled piece of paper."
