Richard Woods' 'The Spirit Level Show'

domobaal is delighted to present Richard Woods' solo exhibition 'The Spirit Level Show' in a wonky world, on a round planet, with a serious abscence of level–headedness globally, this would seem a timely show.

Richard Woods: "If I stand with my back to the kitchen sink and look towards the Hackney Road there’s a view where I can perfectly align the top of the large kitchen windows at the back of our house and the roof tops of the houses that sit directly behind us on Coate Street. If I'm stood in exactly the right spot everything lines up perfectly. Even though I've made this observation hundreds of times its comforting the see that neither our house nor the houses on the Hackney Road haven’t subsided since the last time I checked.

About a year ago I came across an article online about a retired engineer who had collected around 100 antique spirit levels. He had displayed them all in his dining room on specially made shelves.

In the article he talked about how the perfectly aligned spirit levels gave him a sense of order that he found comforting. Somehow softening the turbulence and chaos of everyday life.

During the past 10 months I've made 100 of my own spirit levels. And this winter I'll be exhibiting them as a single installation at domobaal in London. The levels are in direct conversation with the gallery's elegant Georgian Architecture, running along door tops, finding verticals up against cornices and running horizontally along the skirting boards and fireplaces. The levels aim to find horizontals and verticals wherever they can, looking for rationalism and order in a house built in the 1750's."
