DOMOBAAL is delighted to present Christiane Baumgartner’s second solo exhibition in the gallery. She will show her latest monumental woodcut: Triptychon which will be exhibited for the first time.

“Based in Leipzig, a city famous for printmaking, Baumgartner, acknowledges the tradition she springs from whilst developing an extraordinarily distinct practice. Her woodcuts, with their conceptual rigour and visual impact, very arguably are some of the most impressive art works being made in Germany today.” (Jonathan Watkins, Director, Ikon Gallery, from the introduction to the catalogue published by the Ikon Gallery, July 2005.)

Baumgartner’s work has focused consistently on video, and woodcuts, working predominantly in series and increasingly on a large scale, dealing with the subject matter of time and speed. Working in her signature rigorous horizontal lines, carved seemingly unendingly, expertly through wood plates, she successfully defies the common sense logic of her chosen medium.

Recent exhibitions have included East International 2004, Kunstmuseum Bonn and currently her solo show at the Ikon Gallery, Birmingham. Since her last solo show here in September 2003, Christiane Baumgartner’s large woodcut Transall has been acquired by MoMA, New York, and will shortly be installed in the permanent collection. The Albertina Museum in Vienna, has also acquired Transall in addition to the series of 8 large wind farm prints, Fahrt II. This body of work will be installed in its own room, as part of the permanent collection.
